Rules

All pieces, unless otherwise stated, must be chosen from the same grade level from the syllabi of the Royal Conservatory of Music or Conservatory Canada, and entered at the appropriate grade level. Entries that do not comply with the standards set out will not be accepted.
All students will be grouped by grade within the five major age categories: Beginner (10 and under), Junior (14 and under), Intermediate (18 and under), Senior (28 and under), and Adult (29 & over - please note, this adult vocal rule supersedes General Rule #33.
Junior students may repeat grades as needed. If an examination is completed prior to January 1, 2014 the student must enter the festival in a higher grade/level.
Classical Concert Groups: NOTE: Only those students entering Classical Concert group will be considered as provincial delegates for classical voice at Performing Arts BC.

Transposition

In the introductory Grade and Grades 1-8, songs may be transposed into any key to suit the range of the candidate’s voice
In Grades 9, 10 and ARCT art songs, Lieder and folksongs may be sung in any published key. Arias from operas or oratorios must be sung in the original key

Musical Theatre classes: Note: Only those students entering Musical Theatre Concert Group class will be considered as musical theatre delegates to Performing Arts BC.
- Staging and costuming is expected using a chair/stool and small hand held props only. Please no live flame.
- NOTE: Only those students entering Musical theatre Concert Group class will be considered as musical theatre or tri-discipline delegates to Performing Arts BC.

PLEASE NOTE: To qualify for the Provincial Festival, a student must enter 2 solo classes in one discipline. PABC considers a Concert Group (consisting of 2 or 3 pieces) as 1 class only, therefore he/she must enter 1 Concert Group plus another Solo Class - or - enter 2 (or more) separate solo classes.
Participants recommended to PERFORMING ARTS BC in two disciplines may attend in ONE discipline only.

Vocal and Choral Adjudicator

CATHERINE ROBBINS is a dynamic music educator known especially for her work in vocal techniques and choral pedagogy for developing voices.

Dr. Robbins is currently Associate Professor of Choral Studies and Music Education at the University of Manitoba Desautels Faculty of Music. She teaches courses in conducting, choral methods and literature, vocal pedagogy for choirs, and directs the University of Manitoba Concert Choir.

Catherine has twice been honoured with U of M Merit Awards in the areas of teaching and service. Her primary research focuses on applications of anatomical awareness and fascia science to the voice.

Her creative works involve collaborations with Indigenous artists and explore new ways of thinking about publishing works from oral traditions. She has presented at provincial, national, and international conferences and symposiums in the areas of choral music education and vocal techniques.

Dr. Robbins has enjoyed a rich private teaching studio and has taught at all levels of the school system in Manitoba. She loves working with singers of all ages.
